When the truth about God, man, and the spiritual creation...
When the truth about God, man, and the spiritual creation came to my notice, I was a man of the world, so to speak, a habitual user of tobacco, addicted to vulgarity and all evil speaking, unconsciously using profane language without any provocation whatever. I was also on the verge of becoming a confirmed drunkard, having remained in this mental state so many years that these conditions of carnality had become apparently inevitable.
In August, 1906, I began reading Science and Health. At first my mental attitude was that of skepticism, but through mere curiosity I continued to read, and when barely half way through the book the light of this beautiful truth began to dawn upon my clouded consciousness, and the mist of old "mortal night" began to vanish into its native nothingness. By the time I had finished it the former conditions of mortal thought that had bound me in outer darkness had disappeared. The words of the Master, "I am the resurrection, and the life," were clearer and dearer to me than ever before, for, in the language of the apostle Paul, "to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." I had been dead, lo! these many years, although in the body, but the Word which in the beginning was with God, and which was God, had spoken to me through Christ, Truth, and had cleansed me from all these immoral conditions of carnal-mindedness, except the one most subtle tempter calling itself the liquor habit. This was later completely overcome through the understanding of Truth, leaving me free from all former temptations.
To say that I am grateful for Christian Science is but inadequately to express my gratitude. I am thankful to God and grateful to Mrs. Eddy for this truth and for what it has done and is doing for me, and mine, and all.
