I have greatly desired to be able to give a complete testimony...
I have greatly desired to be able to give a complete testimony with unreserved gratitude for the many blessings which I and my dear relatives have received through several years' study of Christian Science, the religion of Truth, Love, and Life. Like so many of my fellow men, I was in possession of a well-preserved Bible, which would be taken out at serious times, and I was satisfied, according to the concept of God which I then entertained, that by attending religious services, by giving thanks and offering prayers,—though this was not of daily occurrence,—as well as by participating in the activities of our church, I was on the whole fulfilling my duties as a Christian. Fortunately I was to be shown my mistake, and this while trying to find a method of cure for a so-called nervous trouble which caused me mental suffering.
As president of a nature cure society, as an active supporter of a drugless system of cure, and a believer in hygienic gymnastics and other material means of help, I believed I was able to improve myself and others. This was not the case, however, and when the enterprise turned out to be a failure from a business point of view, with more difficulties and disappointments following, I went on groping, in search for a perfect means of bringing help to sufferers. In the meanwhile my sister-in-law, who was visiting at our home and seeking relief from heart trouble, had Christian Science brought to her attention and was given copies of the Herold by dear acquaintances, besides receiving treatment from a practitioner.
Upon my return home from the place where I spent my vacation, I found these copies of the Herold, which had been laid aside, and the contents appealed to me so strongly that I communicated immediately with faithful adherents of this wonderful teaching. I attended the Sunday services and the testimony meetings, subscribed to the Herold, and secured a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. For my part I found and accepted in these teachings what my sister-in-law, excellent person though she surely is, was unwilling to follow up, from purely religious considerations, as she thought. I am happy to be able to say that, thanks to the assistance of a practitioner and an ideal friendship in Christian Science with several families near by, I have been healed in both mind and body, and have indeed learned that "it is the spirit that quickeneth."
