For about twenty years it seemed necessary for me to wear a support for a weakness resulting from internal injuries. Nine years ago I underwent several operations, but when the time came for me to leave the hospital—after five weeks in bed—the surgeon told me I would still have to wear the girdle.
Soon after becoming interested in Christian Science I felt that I ought to be able to discard the material support, and did so, for I felt that God is our only support, and knew that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). I was often beset with fears that perhaps my old sufferings would return, and twice I put the support on again for a few hours. I kept it in my dresser drawer, fearing I might need it. About a year ago I suffered a great deal of pain, and constantly the thought came to me that it might be the result of discarding the girdle. I did not put it on, however, but worked for myself, as we learn to do in Christian Science, trying, as Mrs. Eddy tells us, to "cling steadfastly to God and His idea" (Science and Health, p. 495), and the pain soon left me. That evening I opened my Bible, looking for some thought to help me to help another, and my eyes fell upon a passage that described my experience so completely, and the message was so evidently for me, that I took the support from its hiding place and destroyed it.
During the past year I have felt no need to return to a material support. I have done more work in the house and have been in better health than for a long time. I spent four weeks at the shore, bathing almost every day in the surf, when heretofore I never went into the ocean without this girdle. We are more and more interested in Science and its teachings every day.
