[Written for the Sentinel ]

The Prince of Peace

When thou in lowliness of heart dost wait
On Love, for answer to thy plea
Art list'ning for my voice, my will to know,—
My peace I give.

When lusting thought is hushed in silent prayer
To Love, for meat and drink sublime,
When bowed in pure desire my will to do,—
My peace I give.

When Gabriel's presence mortal contests quells,
The great red dragon quails in fear:
With him that overcomes his will for mine,
My peace I leave.

When life triumphant soars above the grave
And death lies vanquished at thy feet,
When love is seen as perfect prayer and praise,
My peace I bring.

When mortal will is conquered, self is dumb,
And in thyself mine image I behold,
In confidence serene thy light then shines,—
Thy Prince hath come!
