From my earliest recollection I wondered why those who were supposed to know God were not able to turn to Him in times of sickness, want, or distress, and find their prayers answered as did Jesus' disciples and the early Christians. The Bible was read in our home every Sunday, though with no explanation of the saving power of divine Love; but the hope that God would at some time and in some way be revealed to us was never quite lost.
Arriving at womanhood I found myself many thousand miles from home and loved ones, in poor health and with other problems so great that there seemed scarcely a ray of light. In this seeming extremity thought was constantly reaching out for God. I had been treated by several physicians for stomach disorder, nervous trouble, headaches, and other diseases, but with only temporary relief. I had also followed rigid systems of dieting, so that I was constantly longing for food, but dared not eat it. At this point a friend, seeing my fear of food and of almost everything else, placed in my hands a copy of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. As soon as I began to read this book it was very clear to me that here was the truth for which I had so longed.
I read until late in the night, forgetting the law made by the doctors that I must not read in the evening. This was repeated daily for some time, but from the first day there was no return of headaches. Fear of food also vanished; I began to eat everything and experienced no bad results. Nervousness likewise disappeared, and the nights were passed in restful sleep. The truth seemed so wonderful that for days I scarcely laid Science and Health down, and with Jacob of old I said, "Surely the Lord is in this place," as one error after another disappeared before the light of spiritual understanding.
