From Our Exchanges

[Rev. Joseph Fort Newton, D.Litt., in The Christian Commonwealth]

By the mind of Christ we mean more than his capacity for thinking, albeit the depth of his mind, its vitality, its sanity, its white beauty, not less than the sweep and grandeur of its conceptions, are worthy of long study. No, what we mean is his insight, his outlook, his motive, his thought, his knowledge,—the truth which his mind revealed. If in one way his mind seemed limited by what it omitted, in another it was limitless. Sure as a line of light it sought first the supreme Truth, and all other things were added to it, each falling into its place and disclosing its meaning. To the mind of Christ the first truth and the last, the central and sovereign reality, was God, who is Love. From that fountain all his life flowed; from that light all his truth was kindled. No wonder the universe, now dark, now terrible, was transfigured in his mind beyond all power of poet-words to tell, lighted by an eternal sunrise and touched with ineffable beauty.
