In the report of a discourse in the Ealing Congregational Church...

In the report of a discourse in the Ealing Congregational Church, entitled "The Abolition of Death," the preacher is reported to have said: "Escape from death, pronounced possible by Mrs. Eddy through belief in the unreality of death, has been proved impossible, for she has died and her death contradicted what she taught in life. Had her teaching proved true, it would have been the greatest calamity that could have happened to the world."

The teaching of Christian Science with regard to death is in no way disproved by the passing away of Mrs. Eddy. The fact remains that eternal Life is God, who knows no death; a false sense of life may seem to die, but this does not in any way interfere with the immortal Life which is revealed through spiritual understanding. Death is the result of the belief of life in matter.

Mrs. Eddy writes on page 426 of Science and Health, "Sin brought death, and death will disappear with the disappearance of sin." For one so to gain in spirituality as to be able to overcome death would be of the greatest benefit to humanity, for such a demonstration would be the fulfilment of the words of our Master: "He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." There are many examples given in the Bible of those who were spiritually minded enough to overcome death and lay off the flesh, as Jesus did at the ascension. These witnesses are a comfort and an incentive to others to strive to let that Mind be in them "Which was also in Christ Jesus," and which alone can enable them to emulate his works. Christian Science is the Comforter which leadeth into all truth.
