It was at the end of July, 1916, when following a cold bath I was taken with a severe headache, chills, and great weakness. I tried my best to make use of my slight knowledge of Christian Science, but when my condition became worse I had to ask my aunt for help. I grew so weak that it was impossible for me to walk or even talk. High fever set in; I coughed and was unable to sleep. While I had no pain after my aunt started treating me, my physical appearance caused anxiety among those with whom I came in contact, hence I avoided seeing my friends.
Things seemed to be getting worse in this respect, so much so indeed that several members of the family became frightened and wished to call a physician. I had, however, great faith in the truth of Christian Science, and on the day when to material sense my condition seemed worst, God certainly proved to be nearest. Despite the consternation among my relatives when they saw me have two hemorrhages, and my poor mother believing that she must call upon a Scientist friend for help, I realized the fact that Principle is the same for all, and from that day on all disharmony yielded, and then vanished like a bad dream. My strength and appetite returned, the cough disappeared, and my friends who had believed me to be at the worst wondered at the quick recovery which, as we knew, was due to the prayerful efforts of my aunt, whom I helped to the best of my ability by reading Christian Science literature with her.
We are most deeply grateful to Mrs. Eddy, who has left us this beautiful truth as a heritage. Verily the flesh is naught, and Spirit is all.
