When Christ Jesus went about Palestine healing all manner...

The Kokomo (Ind.) Tribune

When Christ Jesus went about Palestine healing all manner of sin and sickness, and declaring, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," the unbelieving Jews, finding it impossible to deny the marvelous works he was accomplishing, said that he had "a devil," or cast out evils "by Beelzebub." History repeats itself. Today, when those who believe in Christ Jesus are doing the works that he said they should do, those calling themselves orthodox, finding it necessary to acknowledge much of the good Christian Science is accomplishing, attempt to detract from it in the same manner. Thus, in the report of a recent sermon we have the spectacle of a professed follower of the Master, one who makes no effort to follow the command to heal the sick, crying "humbug," "absurdity," and the like, and heaping condemnation and ridicule upon thousands of sincere, earnest Christians, known as Christian Scientists, who are honestly trying to prove their faith by their works.

The great Teacher said that his followers should preach the gospel and heal the sick,—both preach and heal,—and he never commanded the use of material medicine or surgery, nor did he directly or indirectly make a concession to so-called material laws in the work he did. There is nothing in the New Testament to indicate that he intended any other means for bringing forth the fruits of Christianity than this: "If ye continue in my word, ... ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Christian Science is Christianly scientific when it declares that the great Teacher meant exactly what he said, and proves, through the healing of every discord known to mankind, that the laws he revealed are ever available for those who seek "in spirit and in truth." All the evidence that any one can ask is at the command of those who desire to know whether or not Christian Science is doing the works that Christ Jesus said should follow "them that believe." What if Christian Science in its teaching and practice does dishonor scholasticism and so-called material science? In doing so it honors God and His laws as does no other teaching known to mankind. Such a religion, therefore, cannot be other than Christian, scientifically Christian.
