An account of the proceedings of the convention of state...

An account of the proceedings of the convention of state health officers reports a physician as saying that Christian Science healers have had insufficient training to enable them to cure diseases. That is a most remarkable statement for a doctor of the present day to make, in view of the well known fact that Christian Science has cured every known disease, including diseases that the medical fraternity have repeatedly pronounced incurable. There are thousands of people today who after unsuccessful treatment for physical ailments by the doctors have turned to Christian Science for help and been cured.

The doctor declares that any one can become a proficient practitioner of Christian Science in twelve lessons, at a cost of three hundred dollars. I desire to correct this statement, as it is not true. Before becoming a Christian Science practitioner it is necessary for one not only to study the teachings of Christian Science but to live up to them, and to lead a life that is acceptable to God, so as to be able to reflect the God-power that heals, as did Jesus of Nazareth. This cannot be done in twelve lessons, but takes many months and oftentimes years. Christian Science healing of sickness as well as of sin is spiritual, and is far more efficacious than material remedies are, in spite of what our friend the doctor believes. Christian Science has hundreds of thousands of followers, a big majority of whom have been healed of some physical ailment through its teachings.

Our friend amused his audience with a quotation from a comic paper to the effect that all a Christian Science healer needs in order to start his activities is a copy of Science and Health and a Prince Albert coat, and further adds, "Thus equipped, he can pray over a virulent case of smallpox until the infection sweeps the neighborhood," all of which is very absurd and unreasonable. There are no more law abiding citizens to be found than the Christian Scientists, and Christian Science practitioners are instructed immediately to notify the local health officers of any case of infectious or contagious disease that comes to their attention, and to obey the quarantine laws. These instructions are followed to the letter.
