It is with a grateful heart that I wish to tell of the blessings which I have received through Christian Science. For years I had been afflicted with rheumatism, also with ever recurring attacks of severe cough alternating with bronchitis, to which catarrh, bowel disorder, and asthma were added later on. During that time all kinds of material means were used, including electricity, which seemed to relieve me somewhat for a while, then the troubles would reappear in a more severe form. In recent years, however, I had attacks of illness which seemed to become more and more severe. I did not dare leave the house for fear of contracting a cold, and to go upstairs became impossible on account of the asthma. I again sought a physician, but he frankly informed me that no help could be expected except through a change of climate, which might prolong my life a few years. He advised me to start for California as early as possible, as it might soon be too late. That was over six years ago. When I arrived in California, and during the following few months, I seemed to be rid of nearly all my troubles; but soon disappointment came. Again I turned to physicians and to drugs, but all proved of no avail.
A friend then told me of Christian Science, and although I was very reluctant to give it any thought, yet seeing no other way out of my difficulty I applied to a practitioner for help. Among the first questions I asked her was whether I must give up my church, to which the loving answer came that divine Love would lead me and point out the way. This has proved true. As I had long ceased to believe that I would ever be entirely freed from my troubles, the healing was slow, thus necessitating greater diligence on my part with regard to the study of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, a German translation of which had been given us. Although I always held the Bible to be a precious book and made much use of it, it did not have the value which it has now that I read it daily with more understanding in connection with Science and Health.
I am entirely well, and am able to read fine print without glasses, as well as to attend to my housework, although I am eighty-three years of age. I considered it impossible to learn the English language during the twenty-three years of my stay in this country, but a few months ago I made a start and have succeeded in learning a few things by heart. next to God I am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for having discovered the truth which makes free, and for having left it as a heritage to humanity. I also rejoice in the true happiness, peace, and harmony which Christian Science has brought me, and would like to add that it has been my privilege to become a member of the Christian Science church.
