A misconception of Christian Science appeared in a paragraph...

Isle of Wight (Ryde) Observer

A misconception of Christian Science appeared in a paragraph entitled "Pain v. Self-control." "Undoubtedly," says the writer, "some Christian Scientists under the spell of religious zeal are able to efface their sensations." Readers of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy know that "the spell of religious zeal" has no part in the teachings of Christian Science, for this religion is simply the scientific application of the truth that Jesus promised would make men free. Fanaticism may efface one sensation by another, but the carnal mind, whether dominated by pain or "the spell of religious zeal" or any other sensation, never yet brought real and lasting healing to any one. Only the Mind that was in Christ Jesus can do that.

Christian Science is teaching the world to seek and find relief from all sensation, from sin and suffering, by a better understanding of the divine Mind, which is with men in the busy highways of modern life no less than it was on the hills of Galilee long ago, and cannot but heal. The ancient stoicism to which the writer of "Pain v. Self-control" refers, was but a phase of human will which, paying the heavy price of overstrain and reaction, reaches a breaking point. Mrs. Eddy tells us that "the scientific government of the body must be attained through the divine Mind" (Science and Health, p. 167), and all who, accepting that statement, put it to the proof, are experiencing in some degree, here and now, "the glorious liberty of the children of God."
