Eleven years ago I turned to Christian Science after ten years of medical and surgical treatment for continual colds. Four physicians had attended me, but none afforded anything more than temporary relief. In my work as a teacher I was greatly handicapped, because for days at a time I could scarcely speak with any comfort or with effect. Finally I asked one of the physicians, a specialist just returned from studying in Europe, if there was not some way to effect a permanent cure. His reply was that on account of the chronic inflamed condition of the vocal cords it would take not less than six months in a dry, hot climate to restore them to a normal state.
About this time I had a visit with a college friend who had experienced a remarkable healing of his eyes, supposedly injured by overuse with the microscope. My talk with him induced me to try Christian Science. This was at the beginning of winter and I was seemingly in the throes of the old difficulty, but great improvement was at once manifested. I had always been warned to use the voice as little as possible, but my adviser and helper in Christian Science told me that if I believed I was doing right in my work as a teacher, and if I needed to use my voice in that work, a just God would not hinder me. At this time I was also helping to direct the school athletics, and doing evening work in settlements and boys' clubs. At once I abandoned all the old fears and entered joyfully into my duties with renewed confidence. The resulting sense of freedom is known only to those who have experienced it.
During the years since then I have used my voice extensively in teaching, debating, and public speaking, and my help has not failed me. A change of climate has brought no fears and no ill effects. I cannot say that absolute freedom from colds has been secured, but there has never been a time when the trouble has not yielded in a few days, and without any inconvenience in the use of my voice. Only once in the last three years has there been a manifestation of hoarseness, and there has been constant gain in place of continued difficulty.
