Eighteen years ago, Science and Health was brought into...
Eighteen years ago, Science and Health was brought into my home by a member of the family. For ten years I did not even open the book, but loaned it to many friends who were ill, with the remark that it might help them. During those years I was wrapped up in my own church, taking a leading part in all its activities. I read the Bible faithfully, and prayed reverently as I then understood prayer.
During that time a serious eruption appeared on my face, and in three weeks it had grown to an alarming size. Secretly I held the fear of malignant growth, while neighbors and friends pronounced it the same thing. When my husband, who is a traveling salesman, came home, he said it was a malignant growth and wanted to take me to our doctor immediately; but I remembered that a few years previous a physician during a friendly talk had told us there was no cure for this trouble, so fear kept me from going to the doctor. We became very much depressed, but one day the thought came to me to read Science and Health. I read on and on, for hours at a time, and was surprised and overjoyed at the beauty and holiness of the thought expressed. Needless to say, my face was entirely healed in four weeks, and in eight years the trouble has not returned. This healing came just from reading Science and Health.
Since then I have had many proofs of God's love. A young girl who has lived with me many years was severely burned as she was about to put a pie in the oven. As she opened the gas oven door a sheet of flame shot out, striking her in the face. Her eyebrows and lashes were burned off, as well as the hair around her face, and her face, ears, and neck, also the right hand and arm, were a mass of burns and blisters. I immediateloy called a Christian Science practitioner, and we clung "steadfastly to God and His idea" (Science and Health, p. 495). This was about eleven o'lock in the morning, and the afternoon of the following day she took a boat ride with friends. No one made any remark about her appearance, as they did not know of the accident, and this proved to us that there was no disfigurement, the healing being complete in twenty-four hours.
