Sixteen years ago a sister was healed through Christian Science of what to human sense was an incurable disease. I could not understand how treating mentally could heal a physical disorder, and could not accept the teaching of Christian Science; but God's ways are higher than our ways. Occasionally I would read the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the beauty of its language attracted my attention. Thus two years passed by, during which time I attended the Christian Science services frequently.

For several years previous to the healing of my sister I had attacks of inflammation of the kidneys and would be confined to the bed for several days. I had not suffered from any disorder for upward of a year, so had come to the conclusion that this sickness would never trouble me again; but in the fall of 1902 it suddenly returned in what seemed a more acute form, as the suffering was more intense. Finally a doctor was called, and the ailment was diagnosed as acute inflammation of the kidneys and bladder. For three weeks I was under his care, but at last told him I was not improving as I should. He said there was nothing more he could do for me, as the medicines prescribed did not have the results he had expected. Then came weeks of despondency. Finally bloating set in, but I kept this from my husband, so as not to alarm him; my eyesight also began to fail, and I could not walk upright any more.

One day, when I seemed to feel worse than usual, the question came to me, "Can God heal the sick?" but I turned from the truth, firmly believing I would have to die. So the struggle went on in my consciousness between Truth and error. Again the thought came to me that Truth heals all manner of sickness, and I spoke aloud, saying: "Yes, I will turn to Christian Science. God can and does heal, and God is All-in-all." In that instant all pain disappeared and I stood erect, something that had not been possible for weeks on account of the suffering it caused. Then came the desire to understand something of the Principle which had healed me, so a conscientious study of the text-book followed, and for weeks I read nothing else. This disorder has never again manifested itself.
