I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing...

I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing, but because I believed that if we call ourselves Christians we are bound to heal the sick and the sinning. While reading Mrs. Eddy's book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" for the first time, I saw that its logic is flawless, and that if true the putting into practice of its teachings would heal every discordant condition on earth. In the quiet communion with God which followed this revelation I knew that here at last was a practical religion.

One day when I was reading Mrs. Eddy's poem "Christ and Christmas," something of what the immeasurable purity of the Christ really means was realized,—purity in which not a single element of human belief is expressed. I can never express my gratitude for the light which flowed into consciousness. I had caught a glimpse of what the real man is, made in God's own image and likeness, and with this came such a spiritual illumination as cannot be put into words. Later I came to see, in the light of divine Love, that all the high ideals which to me were the only things that made life worth living, up to which to had tried to live and for which I would have given my life rather than be untrue to them, were to a great extent a cloak for self-righteousness and self-love, and I was humbled to the very dust. Yet Jesus said, "Be ye therefore perfect," and he meant all he said. A sense of utter helplessness overpowered me as I realized that of myself I could do nothing, but with that came also the consciousness of a divine tenderness penetrating the human sense, and the absolute certainty that by the power of the Christ the whole human nature could be overcome.

I had practically given up reading the Bible, because I could not understand it. It seemed full of contradictions, but Science and Health has thrown such a light on it that now it is illumined with wonderful meaning. Through Mrs. Eddy's writings we gain an understanding of the divine Principle which enables us to heal ourselves and others of sin and sickness. On one occasion my throat had been very painful all day, and when I awoke next morning the condition seemed even worse. I was entirely healed in less than ten minutes, however, by the understanding that in divine Mind there are no false mental images. Another time a severe and very painful attack of poisoning, lasting three days and nights, suddenly left me when I realized the omnipotence of good. Every discordant condition disappeared instantly. An injured ankle was also quickly healed.
