Plymouth (Ind.) Republican
I am told that in the sermon reported in your paper recently, this statement was made: "Christian Science claims to be based solely on the Bible, and to be in harmony with the gospel of Jesus. A very superficial investigation will convince most people that it is the opposite of the truth." "A very superficial investigation" of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, cannot possibly fit one to expound its teachings or to criticize them justly.
Christian Science accepts the whole of the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation, no matter if our reverend critic did attempt to prove the contrary, and there are many thousands of representative substantial people who are giving testimony that the Christian Science text-book unlocks the spiritual treasures of the Scriptures. As any one who goes beneath the mere surface of things will learn, Christian Science accepts and uses the Old Testament, but is founded directly on the teachings and works of Christ Jesus.
Mrs. Eddy did not lay stress on one Bible teaching at the expense of another, and it is just as imperative that the followers of the Master obey his command, "Heal the sick," as it is to obey his other command, "Preach the gospel." The New Testament records that Paul and the other apostles healed the sick through prayer and spiritual understanding, and that they preached the gospel. Secular history shows that the early Christians did the same until the close of the third century; but from that time until 1866, when Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science, Christianity was chiefly engaged in preaching. In restoring the works of primitive Christianity by healing every kind of sin and all manner of diseases,—of which indisputable evidence may be had for the asking,—Christian Science furnishes proof of its Scriptural authority.
