To say that the method of Christian Science healing includes an attempt to inculcate in the patient's mind "confidence in the skill of the healer," or "in the efficacy of his method," or "in the ardent desire of the healer to give relief," is to express a total misconception of the way in which Christian Science heals. In words which are unequivocal and form the recipe for all true healing, Jesus the master Metaphysician said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." As explained in Christian Science this statement means that the understanding of God, man, and spiritual law is the truth that man must know and realize as a prerequisite to his freedom or healing.

Undoubtedly the great majority of those healed in Christian Science have in the first instance little faith in the practitioner or the method he employs. They come not because of faith, but because of desperation. The basis of all Christian Science healing is entirely apart from faith in persons or personal methods. It goes to the very root of creation, is based on the one primal cause, God, and man's relation to Him. Christian healing is accomplished only through the understanding of spiritual truth and the realization of the facts of spiritual creation. As Mrs. Eddy has well stated, "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration" (Science and Health, p. 259).

Christian Science does not claim that its healing method is something new, but rather that it is as old as Truth itself, for it is Truth's own. Discerned in some measure by the prophets, it was more fully understood and demonstrated by Jesus and the apostles. It fell into disuse with the rise of materialism, dating from the time of Constantine, and has again come to light and been made practicable through the teachings of Christian Science, which enable all who will to reap the benefits of a demonstrable Christianity.
