I feel it a duty to tell of some of the great benefits I have received through Christian Science. From childhood I was always sick and ailing and under some doctor's care. Earache and catarrh seemed to be chronic afflictions. When thirteen years old I had a severe attack of typhoid fever, and it left me with a skin disease, which first appeared on my head and afterward spread all over the body. This, with catarrh, made life a burden to me for many years. As I grew older other diseases set in, among them stomach disorder, liver complaint, a bowel difficulty, kidney trouble, neuralgia, and rheumatism; then in middle age my eyesight failed and expensive glasses had to be worn. One winter I contracted a severe cold and an abscess formed in my right ear. I was living in an eastern city, and was obliged to be out much of the time, although the weather was unusually cold and wet. I tried to doctor myself, but continually grew worse. I would work during the day and walk the floor distracted by pain half the night, but finally gave up and went to a doctor, who examined the ear and said the case had gone too far. He gave me a card to a noted specialist, and after an examination this doctor promptly sent me to the hospital, where I remained a week or ten days. I came out relieved of the pain but entirely deaf in that ear. On being asked if he thought my hearing would ever improve, the doctor said the ulcers had destroyed the ear-drum and I would never hear again with that ear.

Friends advised me to try a warmer climate, so I came to California in the spring of 1900; but most of the old troubles soon began to manifest themselves in one form or another. After a few months I became acquainted with a lady who proved to be about the best friend I ever had, for she interested me in Christian Science. To my thought it was all humbug, but a healing brought about through her earnest work waked me up. I knew if Christian Science could cure a case like that it was far ahead of medicine, so decided to investigate. I borrowed the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read it through three times within a week, reading night and day and hardly stopping to eat or sleep. At the end of the week several of the ailments had vanished. A few weeks more, and upon arising one morning everything looked bright and clear, and I found I could read fine print without glasses. A month after this experience I waked up one night and could hear the clock tick with the deaf ear. It startled me so that I sat up in bed, and holding my watch first to one ear, then to the other, found I could hear better with the supposedly deaf ear than with the other. That was fourteen years ago and it is still all right; in fact, both sight and hearing are excellent, and I have not an ache or a pain to trouble me.

The spiritual uplift is, however, more than the physical healing. Fear, worry, and anxiety have vanished, and I am free from all those old errors that held me in bondage so many years. I have taken the Sentinel for fourteen years and would feel lost without it. There are no words in the English language adequate to express my thankfulness to God, and my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for all the blessings I have received through Christian Science as explained in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," for it reveals the healing Christ that makes us free.
