Mental Preparation
The master mariner about to voyage over the trackless seas is a true exponent of right preparation up to his highest understanding. He takes all wise precautions as to the perfection of his equipment, the better to meet whatever adverse conditions may arise, whatever vicissitudes of wind and weather. Not the least important of his preparations is the procuring of an authentic chart of the course to be traversed and the testing of the ship's compass to insure its absolute accuracy. Thus equipped, he embarks with full confidence that if he sail by chart and compass, no matter how lowering the skies, how dense the mist, how fierce the gale, his arrival at the haven where he would be is reasonably assured. In fact, without even a glimpse of sun or moon or stars many an ocean voyage is successfully made by what the sailor terms "dead reckoning;" that is, by faithfully following the course prescribed by the chart and measured by the log.
To a rapidly increasing number of persons it is becoming apparent that the practical wisdom displayed by the mariner finds its parallel in the mental preparation necessary to meet the varying conditions of mortal mind which may be encountered in that round of human affairs termed daily life. As with the follower of the sea, the more carefully one's course is charted and followed, the surer is he to withstand successfully the cross-currents and counter-winds, to avoid the rocks and shallows of human belief, and to anchor safely in that desired haven, the mental peace that passeth understanding.
As it is more clearly understood that all causation is mental, that life is consciousness, that right action is always and invariably consequent upon right thinking, will the real significance of this mental preparation be seen, its true value recognized. On page 24 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy speaks of making the Bible "the chart of life." In this Book of books are found the great fundamental truths which must be known and followed faithfully if the daily living is to be harmonious and really successful. This is indeed the chart, but the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," may be described as the compass which points with unerring precision to the divine Principle of all real being.
