In his sermon as reported, an evangelist attacks Christian Science

Paris (Ill.) Beacon

In his sermon as reported, an evangelist attacks Christian Science. It would have been a better example, both of the brotherly attitude, which seems to have been present in considerable measure, and of the spirit of the humble Nazarene, if attacks upon those who are honestly and earnestly undertaking to interpret Christianity and to make it a redeeming force in their lives had been conspicuous by their absence.

Christian Science places works above words, as did Jesus himself, for it is putting into practice Jesus' precepts and following his example, without excluding the healing of the sick. Most Christian denominations take the liberty of omitting the command to heal, but they should not on that account denounce those who accept it and put it into practice, for the exemplification of this precept constitutes the most striking part of the record of Jesus' ministry. Mrs. Eddy, whose spirituality and tireless study of the Scriptures enabled her to glean from the Bible an understanding which heals the sick, as did the Christian church before and for several centuries after the crucifixion, was not and could not have been anything but good, pure, and unselfish. As Jesus said, "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit."
