For almost thirty years I suffered from a trouble which was variously diagnosed by medical men as lumbago, sciatica, kidney disease, and so on. Their treatment failed to give any relief, and as the years passed my condition grew worse, until I was quite lame, could not stand erect, and suffered almost continual pain. Finally an osteopathic physician diagnosed the trouble as a partial dislocation of the hip-joint. He gave me great relief both from the pain and from the lameness, but the healing was not permanent. During the next few years the trouble would frequently recur, and as frequently yield temporarily to this form of treatment.
About nine years ago the study of Christian Science was taken up, and while I was soon healed of very troublesome forms of stomach and bowel disorder of long standing, and was enabled to give up the use of medicines entirely, the hip trouble continued to annoy me at intervals. In the fall of 1912 I disposed of my office business in town and moved to a farm. I soon learned, however, that it is impossible to run away from inharmony, for after a year on the farm it seemed that fear, anxiety, and worry over business affairs, as well as the unaccustomed strenuous labor, combined to bring on a complete physical breakdown, the seat of which was in the affected hip. The condition was much more serious than ever before, and the pain became well-nigh unbearable.
For several years we had been depending on Christian Science for physical healing, so my wife wired to a practitioner in Portland, Ore., for help. Absent treatment was given for a week or more without any apparent result. During this time I found myself often thinking of osteopathy, and finally decided to give it another trial. I went to Portland and dismissed the Christian Science practitioner, then placed myself under the care of one of the leading osteopaths of the city. He soon corrected the dislocation, but no relief from the pain was afforded. After several days' treatment he advised me to go home and remain four days, then if not better to return for further treatment. He said, however, that if I was not better by that time he would be forced to conclude that a condition existed much more serious and difficult to correct than the old trouble. I came home and waited the designated time, but steadily grew worse.
