Christian Science came to me at a time when the future...
Christian Science came to me at a time when the future seemed barren and gloomy indeed; now this teaching means more to me than I can ever express in words. Only a life lived in accordance with the Sermon on the Mount can show forth in a small measure what I feel toward a God who is good; toward Christ Jesus, who showed us the way; and toward Mrs. Eddy, who was obedient enough, pure enough, and steadfast enough to bring to us here and now the truth of man's relationship to divine Love.
During the twelve years of my illness I had undergone three serious operations, and had suffered severe attacks of nervous breakdown with all the ills that seem to follow in the wake of such conditions. At times I was fairly well and able to work, but was never entirely free from pain. For two years before Christian Science found me I was an invalid, and my husband had brought me West in the hope that the pleasant climate of California might mean health for me. Although my condition improved to some extent and I gained in weight and was able to be up and around the house a good deal of the time, there was constant suffering, and it was impossible to sleep without an opiate. I could not go anywhere alone, being unable to get up and down the car steps, and after walking a couple of blocks would have to sit down and rest.
A kindly neighbor, a Christian Science practitioner, brought the truth to me, and to my husband as well, in October, 1913. Within three months I was going anywhere that I wished alone, doing all my own work, sleeping all night long without an opiate, and eating anything placed before me, though chronic catarrh of the stomach, necessitating a rigid diet, had been one of my most annoying complaints. Bowel disorder of five years' standing was overcome in one treatment, and rectal hemorrhages disappeared in a short time. Bronchitis of a severe nature has been entirely overcome, likewise extreme nervousness, which was the source of constant suffering. Through daily study of the Lesson-Sermon bladder trouble of long standing, which had been the cause of intense pain and had rendered it impossible for me to be on my feet, disappeared never to return.
