[Written for the Sentinel]

"He careth for you"

SEE how the lily grows, so pure and fair,
As if to do God's will, His love express;
With leaves spread out in mute, unconscious prayer,
Nor toils to weave so exquisite a dress.

All needs by God supplied,—it takes no thought
For air or sunshine or refreshing shower.
No care-filled day, no night with sorrow fraught,
Disturbs its calm, its trust from hour to hour.

O ye of little faith, with many woes,
Who haste along life's highway full of cares,
Pause and consider how the lily grows,
And stoop to note the garment that it wears.

Vast is the source of sunshine and of air,
Deep is the sea from whence the rain-clouds rise,
Yet is the love which all God's children share,
Vaster than deepest sea or boundless skies!
