In September, 1907, I bought transportation for my daughter and myself to Washington, D. C., by way of Memphis, Tenn. We arrived in Memphis on Sunday and had to wait there for seven or eight hours. Hanging on the wall of the waiting-room was a rack containing Christian Science literature. I took a Sentinel and began to read it, then asked my daughter if she knew anything about Christian Science. She said she did not, except that she had heard it was a discovery by Mrs. Eddy and that she and her students were healing disease the same as Jesus and his apostles did nineteen centuries ago.
Going on with my reading, I noticed that in the different articles and testimonies reference was made to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and remarked that if there was a key to the Scriptures whereby one could get an understanding of the Bible, I should very much like to have it. My daughter told me to put the Sentinel in my grip and when we got to Washington we could buy the book. I then took a Journal from the rack, and after reading it for a few minutes placed it with the Sentinel.
On the next day these periodicals were read and reread, and when we got to Washington I secured a copy of Science and Health. The reading of this wonderful book healed me in six months of a stiff joint in my right elbow, caused by being thrown from a buggy twelve years before. The power of Truth as revealed in Christian Science also healed me of a fascination for gambling, which I had followed as a profession for over twenty-four years.
