About nine years ago I was suffering from what the doctors called neurasthenia, being unable to eat or sleep or to attend to my household duties. On the advice of the doctor who was attending me I was taken to a nerve specialist in New York, but he said he could do nothing for me and advised me to go to a sanitarium. I did so, but was too weak to take any of the treatments given there. I therefore consulted a prominent specialist of New York, whose diagnosis was severe stomach trouble and an abnormal condition of the kidneys, for which he advised an operation. I then saw another well-known specialist, and in accordance with his advice again went to a sanitarium.
When I had been at this institution about three months the doctor told my husband he did not think I would ever be any better. A friend heard of this, and on remarking that there must be something which would help me, she was asked if we had tried Christian Science. She had never heard of this teaching before, but began to investigate and to inquire concerning it. Although at first refusing to have treatment, as it seemed to me that everything possible had been done for me, I finally consented. The practitioner nearest the sanitarium was called and treatment was begun. At the end of a week she told me I must leave the sanitarium, as she could not treat me if my remaining there would bring me under the doctor's care and orders.
My husband having rented a cottage opposite the sanitarium for the summer, so that my three children could be near me, I was advised to go there, although the doctor said a nurse must go with me, as it had been necessary that one should be in attendance day and night. The practitioner, however, said a nurse was not needed; that she would take care of that. Treatment was continued for about three months, and my healing came gradually, as the truth was revealed to me. I am now well, and can do more work than I ever did before coming into Christian Science.
