When Christian Science found me, almost five years ago, I...

When Christian Science found me, almost five years ago, I was both mentally and physically sick. Like many others, I was afraid to try Christian Science for fear of becoming like those "peculiar Scientists," as I in my ignorance termed them. I had suffered some six years from a bowel and stomach trouble, and our family physician told me that he could do no more for me than he had done, namely, change my medicine from time to time. Soon after this I became alarmed to find that my strength was failing. I had never been very robust, but still I had always attended to my household duties. Most of the summer before coming into Christian Science, however, I found it necessary to lie down a great deal, as my back ached constantly.

My husband and I finally decided to try Christian Science, for we felt that at least it could do me no harm, so I began to take treatment. I shall never forget the first night of restful sleep and the peace of my thoughts. The bowel trouble yielded very slowly. It was not entirely overcome for about nine months, but I am grateful to say that I was never once tempted to take medicine and that in itself was a great blessing. I am very grateful for the slow healing, since I was led to study more diligently.

The first day that I went to the practitioner she told me I must do my part, namely, read Science and Health. I informed her that it would be impossible for me to read more than a page or two, as the oculist who fitted my last glasses had warned me to use my eyes as carefully as possible. He said there was very little sight in the right eye, that I had been born with defective eyesight, and that while the left eye was only slightly affected, still I would have to be very careful of it. I only promised to read a couple of pages of Science and Health each day, but I found that precious book so interesting that I read every spare minute. After three or four days, when I began to find my vision blurred I would read a sentence at a time and then stop for a while; but this did not last very long, for after ten days my eyes were completely healed. I have perfect sight now, and can read for any length of time. The eyes never tire. I had only two weeks' treatment, as I felt that with such perfect sight the stomach trouble could be overcome by reading, and this proved to be true, for I am entirely healed.
