The Intelligencer
An evangelist is quoted as stating of Christian Science that it is evil, not according to Scripture, and inspired, he believed, by the devil. This opinion is so utterly contrary to facts and so altogether at variance with Christian Science as its teachings have become known and respected by hundreds of thousands of people, that it seems strange and almost incredible that a minister of the gospel can at this time give utterance to such statements.
There has always been a tendency upon the part of ecclesiastical monopolists to arrogate to themselves the right to dictate what is or is not "sound doctrine." This was evidenced in the time of Jesus when the Pharisees voiced the opinion that he was of Beelzebub, that is, inspired by the devil, and as again brought out in the instance of the blind man whom Jesus healed, as recorded in John: "Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."
This is the answer given by Christian Scientists to all such criticisms. They know beyond all doubt or question that Christian Science through its beneficent ministrations has brought into their lives inestimable benefits. They know that whereas they were sick or discordant or poverty stricken, or the victims of appetite or vicious habits, or seemingly subject to other forms of discord, through Christian Science peace and joy and happiness, health and harmony, have come into their lives. They know that they are better men and better women, better fathers and mothers, and better citizens because of what Christian Science has taught them.
