Through the teachings of Christian Science I have been...
Through the teachings of Christian Science I have been freed from one of the heaviest burdens with which mortal man can be weighed down,—the belief in heredity. My father had passed on with a so-called incurable disease, and a few years later my older brother went with the same trouble, so the verdict went forth that I too must be afflicted in the same way. For a number of years the fear of hereditary disease never left me for a moment, though not one of my friends or relatives knew anything about the state of my mind. Finally, in the words of Job, "the thing which I greatly feared" came upon me. Then followed years of suffering and sorrow. The doctors ordered me to a different part of the country, and I spent over five years going from place to place in search of health. My last effort was nearly a year's confinement in a sanitarium in Silver City, N. Mex. However, neither climate nor materia medica seemed to help me, for my condition kept on getting worse.
Christian Science had been recommended to me, but I refused to have anything to do with it, and as I look back on that time I know that it was because I knew absolutely nothing about it. There came a time when I was at the end of my resources, in that I was completely discouraged and knew not which way to turn or what to do. It was on that day that I was led to the home of dear good people whom I had never seen or heard of before. They happened to be the only Christian Scientists in that community, and I shall never forget the words they said to me that day: "You can be healed in Christian Science." That same evening I began the study of the Bible, together with the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I had never read the Bible before, except in Hebrew, and the English Bible was a most wonderful revelation to me. The joy and peace and happiness that immediately followed is beyond my ability to describe. The healing power of God's glorious truth began at once to manifest itself within me, and presently I was freed from that terrible belief of heredity by the understanding that God is our only Father, and the belief of lung trouble was destroyed by the understanding that the children of our heavenly Father are perfect.
It is nearly three years now since this blessed truth made me free. As soon as possible I went back to my former occupation, and today finds me better and stronger, healthier and happier, than ever before. My heart is filled with prayerful thanks to God for His mercy and His loving-kindness. I am thankful for my small understanding of the teachings of Christ Jesus, and grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. for this beautiful religion of Truth and Love.
