In a sentence in the course of a lengthy letter which has just appeared in the Independent under the heading "Spiritualism," your correspondent instanced Christian Science as a system of religion which "repudiates the cross of Christ." Permit me to state that in Christian Science the cross of Christ is not repudiated. Something like twenty references to the cross are to be found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and on page 179 Mrs. Eddy speaks of the necessity for "taking up the cross and following Christ in the daily life."

To the Christian Scientist salvation does not mean something realizable in a future state and location of seraphic bliss, to be entered only through the gloomy gates of death; to him it means a present salvation in spirit and life, attainable here and now in proportion as the carnal mind gives place to the Mind which was in Christ Jesus and as he grows to "the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."

Christian Science is not a religion of opinion and dogma, it is the practical Christianity which Jesus taught; and the test of his following was obedience to his commands, including performance of his works—compound test which he never simplified, narrowed, or elaborated. It is a system of religion capable of proof and demonstration, and it requires from its adherents proofs rather than expressions of Christian power.
