About three years ago Science and Health was loaned to...

About three years ago Science and Health was loaned to me by a very dear friend, who handed it to me on a Saturday with the remark that she could spare it until Monday. This gave me the impression that she prized the book very highly, as I had no book, not even in Bible, which I would not loan for thirty days at least. However, I took the book home, and my wife persued it sufficiently to be desirous of obtaining a copy from the public library, and this she accordingly did. Shortly afterward, when she had an attack of backache, to which she had been subject for years, she said she would like to try Christian Science if I would go with her to a practitioner. I considered myself very indulgent when I consented to do so, and as we neared the building I viewed askance every one I met, wondering if any one might perchance know where we were going. The practitioner was out and my wife was disappointed, but I saw on the next door the name of another practitioner, so I said, "Let us try this one; they are all alike." After a short chat the practitioner picked up a much used copy of Science and Health and read these beautiful words on page 6: "'God is Love.' More than this we cannot ask, higher we cannot look, farther we cannot go." Somehow there was a gently cadence in the reader's voice which made the words sound truly appealing, and I know now it was because she understood what she was reading.

Shortly afterward I was asked to step into the outer room while my wife received treatment. She realized instant relief, and from that time we have had innumerable blessings. After having worn glasses for seventeen years and being unable to do needlework or read very long at one time, a single treatment adjusted the trouble, although my wife had been advised by one of the most prominent eye specialists in the United States to have an operation. Her physical condition has improved in every way.

I had always had the best of physical health, but I soon began to take inventory of my habits and modes of thinking. I had been an inveterate smoker for over twenty years, and I told my wife that I should like to quit the habit. She said nothing, but went to work to see if she could make of herself a channel to bring relief to me, with the result that I was healed of the habit in a week. This meant much to both of us, and soon a red-letter day came in our journey from sense to Soul. We packed all our drugs in a basket, and I took it to a vacant lot and there disposed of its contents.
