The Lectures
The introductory remarks of J. S. Braithwaite at the lecture on Christian Science for First Church of Christ, Scientist, by John W. Doorly at the Queen's Hall were as follows:—
Looking out upon the world today one cannot fail to observe that the events of the past two years have more than ever intensified the need that each one of us should have a clear reason for the hope and the faith that is in him. And not only that he should have such a reason but that he should be able to impart it to others as well, for the world is in great need today of more hope and more faith. We seem to be confronted with a condition of things similar to that foreshadowed by the prophet shepherd of Israel when he said that there should come "a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord,"—words of truth.
Now we see Christian Science offering to the world a very real hope and a practical faith. We see that by its spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures it is bringing health to the sick, comfort to the sorrowing, and regeneration to the sinner; and yet as we regard the immense need of the world today we are sometimes tempted to wonder whether such humble beginnings can ever accomplish all that is required. It is as if some one had said again to us as we look out upon this hungry people, "There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?" We must, however, recall the sequel to that remark; how from that small nucleus was manifested—by the spiritual power which the Master demonstrated and taught others how to demonstrate—abundantly more than was needed to feed that hungry crowd on the hillside of Galilee.
