Giving
Mrs. Eddy says, on page 79 of Science and Health, "Giving does not impoverish us in the service of our Maker, neither does withholding enrich us." How many of us are giving something each day in the service of our Maker? Is it not a duty as well as a privilege to be able to give even in the smallest degree from our storehouse of truth? Some may think they have not sufficient understanding to give, or the opportunity has not presented itself; but can this be true when we are taught in Science that the real man is never separated from God, the divine Mind, who is sending forth each day more than we can receive.
Christ Jesus admonished us, "Freely ye have received, freely give." If we are truly grateful for what we have received, the desire to give will be awakened, and with this desire will come manifold opportunities to give. Let us remember what our Leader says on page 238 of Science and Health, "Unimproved opportunities will rebuke us when we attempt to claim the benefits of an experience we have not made our own, try to reap the harvest we have not sown, and wish to enter unlawfully into the labors of others."
Are not our Wednesday evening meetings a most wonderful avenue through which to give? Then how is it possible for people to come to these meetings year in and year out and never give outward expression to the benefits they have received? We all have something to give, and although we may not know the need which is being supplied, we should let ourselves be willing channels through which divine Mind may find expression. Perhaps the stranger within our gates is waiting for the very thing we have to give; and shall we let a sense of timidity or a fear of not saying the right thing keep us in our seats at these meetings? It may be that we are unconsciously entertaining a spirit of criticism toward some who do speak, thus building up a barrier against our own efforts. The Bible tells us that even Jesus said he could do nothing of himself, but if we have a real desire to give that which will help others our tongues will be loosed.
