In 1904 I first became a student of Christian Science
In 1904 I first became a student of Christian Science. After a nervous breakdown in school, and suffering from sleeplessness for about seven years, I longed for death, which seemed the only solution to my problem. Not only was I suffering in a physical way, but from unrest because I had no assurance that God existed. The blind faith of childhood had been shattered when I arrived at the stage of progress where proof was demanded before acceptance. A kind teacher had often quoted to us a thought from the Bible, that if one is willing to do the Father's will he shall be taught it, and in weary nights of struggle this seemed my only hope. I am confident that Christian Science came in answer to this desire to know God's will.
While I took treatment for physical ills, yet from the first hope was revived and peace restored. My healing was slow, as it was many months before false trusts were broken down and I was ready to admit that God is our only Life. I am now grateful that I had to learn this. Glasses have been laid aside as not needed, teaching has become a joy instead of a burden, a broken arm has been set without pain and perfectly healed in a few weeks; indeed I have been kept well and happy.
When I think of these blessings, should I not be grateful to God for the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy?—Florence V. Bookwalter, Dayton, Ohio.
