The true Christian Science practitioner is a friend of the Master, for he is doing as the Master commanded, that is, preaching the gospel, healing the sick, casting out devils. The realization that I was in personal contact with and had suddenly acquired the friendship of a friend of the Master, came to me with startling certainty and was the most wonderful experience of my life.
For weeks I had suffered from terrible pain at the base of the brain and could get no relief from the doctors. In my despair I was induced by a good friend to try Christian Science. Christmas day, 1913, was full of suffering, so the next day I visited a Christian Science practitioner. He asked for particulars as to my habits and I frankly told him everything, among other things that I had been addicted to the use of liquor for more than twenty-five years and felt the need of it every day, though I did not drink to excess; also that the tobacco habit was firmly fixed as a result of some thirty-five years of smoking. He quietly asked if I desired to give up these habits and on receiving an affirmative answer gave me a treatment.
I went from the practitioner's presence suffering as before, and the day following drank and smoked and endured the pain about as usual, but seemed a trifle better. The second morning I awakened from a quiet, restful sleep, healed,—healed both of the pain and of the desire for liquor. The desire for tobacco clung to me for some time, but finally left me instantly and positively. The joy of it all, and the peace, are glimpses of the promised "kingdom of God" that is "within."—Frank N. Rust, Los Angeles, Cal.
