About six years ago I began the study of Christian Science, not because of poor health or business conditions, but rather because I was inquisitive to know something of its teachings. For a number of years I had been confronted with the continued invalidism of my father and had seen him waste away under medical treatment. At this time matter was the beginning and the end of things to me, but thanks be to God for the hope with which the reading of the chapter entitled Prayer, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, inspired me. I accepted this great truth readily and continued to read on with avidity. As a result, a catarrhal condition in a most virulent form, from which I had suffered for years, disappeared. I had never dreamed that this could be healed, as specialists had said it was incurable in this climate and that they could only allay my suffering.
By this time I had a pretty good talking knowledge of Christian Science, and it became necessary for me to prove my words. Business conditions began to reverse themselves until I seemed confronted by insurmountable difficulties; but by absolute reliance on God and knowing that the only plan or will was the divine, my connections were so altered that my income was more than doubled. During the seeming depression of the past two years I have looked wholly to Spirit and away from matter, with the result that good has always manifested itself.
Recently a severe attack of chills and fever and bodily soreness was entirely overcome in thirty-six hours. Previous to my knowledge of Christian Science this same trouble would keep me in bed from one to two weeks and leave me almost a wreck. Doctors always diagnosed the case as malaria. Christian Science has taught me that substance, health, and peace are spiritual, and that if the one talent of spiritual understanding which we possess is not multiplied by applying it to the problems before us, even that one shall be taken from us. With meekness and humbleness I express my gratitude for this enduring light.—P. A. Wendland, Chicago, Ill.
