I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science, and...
I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science, and for the wonderful healing it has given to me. From early childhood I had suffered from stomach, blood, and nervous disorders, which made it necessary for me to be almost constantly under a physician's care. I believed it injurious to eat various foods, and often craved those things which were denied me. In addition to these physical ailments I was much dissatisfied with the religious sects I had known. I had attended many different churches and was at the time a church-member. Added to these circumstances, the presence in my consciousness of envy, jealousy, and hate made me indeed a miserable person and in need of help.
A few years ago a Christian Scientist came to live in our home and I asked for treatment, as I had been confined to my bed for a month and was getting discouraged. In four days I was able to arise, dress, and attend an entertainment without feeling any discomfort. The following day, Sunday, I went to the Christian Science church. This healing aroused my interest in Christian Science, and I continued to study it and to take treatment for the chronic ailments which still seemed real to me. It was a number of months before entire freedom from these difficulties was experienced, but I never once faltered, nor was tempted to turn back.
Great indeed is my rejoicing that I was thus led, for in addition to the physical healing I was awakened from a false sense of life and happiness to a desire for spiritual growth. Companions of a worldly thought, and the ceaseless desire for gaiety and amusement, gradually left me as some understanding of true happiness and companionship was gained. In proportion to my receptivity to divine Love, the belief in envy, jealousy, and hatred has been cast out. I am daily learning to demonstrate more of the presence and power of God in all my activities. All foods are now eaten without fear of suffering, though like the one mentioned in Science and Health (p. 221), I no longer crave "the fleshpots of Egypt."
