A contributor makes the statement: "One need not be a Christian Scientist to know that a man with a strong effort of will can stave off a cold or influenza." If the writer had stated that one could not be a Christian Scientist and know that a man with a strong effort of will can stave off a cold or influenza, he would have been stating the truth, but not as he puts it, because this intimates that Christian Science is human will-power, or mental suggestion, which is quite untrue. If in reality a man were only able to "stave off" these unwelcome guests by a strong effort of will, he would be in a helpless plight, because, as most of us know, under such conditions there is little if any effort of will left for us to exercise. On page 469 of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes, "The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind," and it is through a higher understanding of what really constitutes this Mind that we are able to know the truth which our Master promised should make us free; and I am sure your readers will agree that one does need to be Christianly scientific or a Christian Scientist to demonstrate that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus."
