At the age of seventy years I fell and sustained a severe injury to the left thigh. I was under medical treatment and lay for months in bed, suffering great pain continually, and when at last I was able to get up, I could only move about on crutches, the effort to move causing so much pain that for years I was confined to my home, seldom ever leaving it.

At the age of seventy-nine I had another fall, breaking the same thigh in another place. When this was learned, my family, remembering my former experience, abandoned all hope of my recovery. In fact one of the doctors said I could live only a few days, and advised against setting the bone, saying it would be better to make me as comfortable as possible, as it would never heal, and that even if it were possible I could not endure the pain and tediousness of long confinement at my age. I then decided to have Christian Science treatment, so the bone was set. The doctor left an opiate in case the pain became too great; but I slept through the first night and all the other nights that followed, without ever touching the drug or any other medicine. Strange as it may seem, I had not the slightest pain at any time after having treatment in Christian Science, but ate and slept well at all times. Two doctors were present to set the bone, and while they agreed to Christian Science treatment, they asked to be allowed to drop in and watch the case.

After four weeks the doctor removed the cradle in which the leg was swung, saying the break was so well healed that I no longer needed it. I asked him when I could get up, and he said, "Not for several weeks yet." He added laughingly, "Be good, and lie there till I come again." At the end of five weeks I arose and dressed myself. Using my crutches as a precaution, I surprised my family by suddenly appearing in the dining-room. They were alarmed about me, but I had no fear, and felt so well that they finally became convinced that I was really well. The doctor did not make that promised visit until two weeks later, when he found me up and about. He was much surprised and somewhat alarmed; but after a careful examination asked if I could stand on that leg. I arose immediately, and without crutch or cane walked diagonally across a long room and back again, a thing I had not done in ten years. The doctor threw up his hands in amazement and soon after left the house, shaking his head and saying, "Well, you certainly have a good constitution."
