About twelve years ago, after seven years of illness, during which she passed through a surgical operation and was treated by various doctors of different schools, my mother was at last pronounced hopelessly ill, a noted nerve specialist of Chicago having said that she would be helpless and melancholy to the end of her days. We then turned to the great Physician for help, praying daily for light. At this point we heard of Christian Science. My mother was brought home from the hospital, where it had been said she must end her days, and placed for seven months in the care of a kind lady who was sent to us from the city, and who was said to be a Christian Scientist, but who did not prove to be such. At first mother seemed to improve somewhat under her care, but afterward she grew worse than before; so this lady left our home, and my sister gave up her position as a teacher to care for mother. We also persuaded our father to leave the farm and move to Warsaw, where I was teaching, so that we, together with the help of a cousin, might care for both parents, as father also was ill.

About this time the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was brought to us by some dear friends, and we began to read it. As there was no practitioner in our city at that time, we read on faithfully, with many doubts and trials. My father was most diligent in the reading at first, and thus was healed of chronic stomach disorder and rheumatism. Heart trouble, catarrh, severe headaches, and various other ills in the family vanished also, besides fear and dread of examinations, and we found ourselves finally united in hopefully and happily expecting even better things.

As my mother grew better, she began to read for herself. The old illusions, which were such monsters to her, gradually disappeared, and her thought became clearer, until at the end of two years she was restored entirely, not only to health of mind and body, but together with her family she was brought to the possession of a peace and satisfaction in regard to our spiritual welfare never before anticipated. The knowledge that there existed an organization of people with whom I should soon be identified, working toward the elimination of sin, disease, and death in the human consciousness, was indeed glad news for me.
