[Written for the Sentinel]

Freedom

An ant was toiling patiently
From twining cords to struggle free.
Enmeshed in these, its only thought
Was the escape it bravely sought;
And neither wailing nor regret
Held its resolve in strangling net.

Yussuf Ben Orem gazed and thought:
Were I in toils of habit caught
And striving freedom to regain,
This little ant makes very plain,
Regret, self-pity, grief ne'er aid,
But faith in freedom unafraid.
