Christian Science was brought to my notice by a dear...

Christian Science was brought to my notice by a dear friend who had realized the power of Truth over error. She faithfully tried to impress upon me that all who wished to be free could be. I was a great sufferer for many years from ills too numerous to mention, and finally, in addition to the others, I was seized with a mental trouble which seemed to crush my every hope. I had tried several doctors and all kinds of medicines, all in vain. For years I dieted for stomach disorder, but as Mrs. Eddy says, "either here or hereafter, suffering or Science must destroy all illusions regarding life and mind" (Science and Health, p. 296), and I came into a knowledge of the truth through suffering.

One day, when it seemed to me that death could be my only relief, I picked up a Sentinel to read while I was waiting for my husband to come for dinner, and while reading the testimonies, I realized a great change. I went to the table knowing that I could eat anything I wanted. The members of my family thought I was not right in my mind and told me I would surely suffer for what I was eating. This happened in May, 1907, and I wish I could tell of the many wonderful proofs of the power of Truth that I have experienced since that time. This one was the first, and it was grand to me, such relief came instantly.

Another case in our family was the healing of my father, who is now seventy-eight years old. For three years he was a great sufferer from gall-stones. In the beginning he was seized with severe pain and vomiting, and these attacks returned oftener as time went on. As he was not willing to try Christian Science, we asked the doctor what he could do, and if he would operate, but he said not in this case, for my father's age was against him and he was very weak. I never ceased to declare the truth for him, but his suffering was so intense that fear seemed to destroy my work. It was not until the doctor gave him no hope that he would consent to try Christian Science. In the afternoon I called a practitioner from the nearest city, and she came to see him by the first train the following morning. His healing was marvelous. He took two weeks' treatment, and has not had the slightest return of the ailment since. I also wish to mention that at the same time we asked help for a domestic animal which had been suffering for over a year, and in three months' time there was no trace of the disease.
