The Aurora (Mo.) World

Recent issues of the World have contained attacks on Christian Science by the evangelist now conducting revival services in Aurora. Space is asked for a brief reply, not only in justice to Christian Science, but also to those of your readers that may have been deceived.

First, let it be said that with the reverend doctor's righteous efforts to preach Christ's gospel there can be naught but hearty accord. What saddens one is, that the doctor seems to feel an impulsion to vilify in order to make converts. Or can it be, indeed, that he uses invective as a sort of nettle-broth with which to sting his audience into excited attention? This method he may deem quite successful, but when he goes out of the way to attack Christian Science, he is manifestly unfair to a very large body of citizens whose lives and deeds in any community entitle them to that immunity from persecution accorded by Jesus: "Forbid him not ... For he that is not against us is on our part."

Our critic, however, will doubtless welcome correction of certain erroneous statements. He says, "The Christian Scientists would come in the town and take all the members out of your churches." That is a mistake. The Christian Scientists would rather see restored to the churches the Christian healing established by the Master. There is a Christian Science organization in Aurora. Is there evidence of such a plot as our critic claims? The Christian Science church does not close its doors to the members of any other church, but it certainly makes no effort to decimate other congregations. Christian Science is offered to all under Jesus' command, "Freely ye have received, freely give," and the efforts to make converts are most unobtrusive and shorn of attacks on other denominations.
