On coming to Christian Science I thought only to experience...
On coming to Christian Science I thought only to experience a physical healing from acute stomach disease and accompanying nervous and bowel troubles. This was the only reason that led me to take up the study of the Bible and the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The Bible as a book of interest had never appealed to me, and was considered useless for any but those who expounded it. Even the instructions received from teachers of different denominations while in pursuit of the truth had failed to impress me, so that I had at last settled down in the firm belief that if God was to be worshiped by me, it must be in my own way and not by any taught rule. This state of thought, accompanied by physical torture, had extended over a period of twelve years, so that when materia medica declared it could do no more in my case, there was nothing left but to apply for Christian Science treatment.
This application was made more to please others than myself, for I had little hope that there could be any help for me, and believed that even though a slight relief might be experienced it could come about only through the action of human will-power. Picture the glad surprise and the following joy when after the first treatment in Christian Science relief was experienced, and within the year I was on the road to an enlarged understanding of Christian Science and its accompanying health and wholeness. The Bible then became to me the Book of books, and as understood in Science and Health it has been an unerring guide, for by means of its higher spiritual teaching, my mother, wife, and children have been safely raised above many seeming difficulties.
