I would like to express my gratitude for all that Christian Science...
I would like to express my gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me. Before I knew of this religion I was for many years in a state of mental darkness and misery. I never went to church, as the old theology I had been taught in my youth was absolutely unsatisfactory, full of contraditions, and of no use to any one who wanted to prove its truth. The God I had been told to worship seemed to me as capricious and unjust as Jupiter, and I would have none of Him. I was filled with bitterness and resentment at the thought of all the sin and useless suffering I saw around me, and concluded that there could be no God, only some blind, cruel power that brought us into life to suffer and to die for no purpose.
In my own household there was always sickness, depression, and endless worry. I suffered greatly from recurring and severe attacks of influenza, constant neuralgia of the head, and great physical exhaustion. My eyes too were becoming affected by the headaches, and I could read at night only with the aid of glasses. One day, in a state of deep depression, I went to visit some friends. They were talking in an eager and animated way about Christian Science, as a Scientist had just been in to see them. I asked what this teaching was, and they said they did not know, but Christian Scientists healed the sick and all seemed happy and healthy. I wondered greatly and enviously what could make them so happy. On returning home I spoke about it to my husband, and we agreed to make inquiries, especially as we wished to teach some religion to our little daughter and had none to give her.
Not long afterward my husband brought me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I took it with me to my room when I went to bed, feeling, as usual, weary and discouraged. I opened it just to read something, as I always did before sleeping, but I had not read long before a great light seemed to shine through all the darkness and I called to my husband, "I have found at last what I have so long been looking for, the truth." Since then my whole outlook on life has changed.
