It is about eleven years since Christian Science was first presented to me. At that time I was under the care of a physician, and had been for several years. God had been absent from my daily thoughts for many months, as my prayers for health had not been answered, nor had my supplication for death to relieve me of the trying days and nights which my mental and physical condition made unbearable. When the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," first came to my notice, it was read with avidity, for there I discovered a different idea of God and of prayer. Very soon I realized that my prayers had been misdirected, because my concept of God was not that of a loving Father.

A three months' course of medical treatment was just drawing to a close, and the physician informed me that he had found complications which would necessitate three months more of his treatment. I resolved to rest for a month before continuing, and said so. I fully intended to return to him, but never did, because I began to read Science and Health, together with the Bible, and at the end of a month was completely healed, being without pain for the first time since I was a child of ten years.

I wish to state that when I began to read Christian Science literature I did it purely from a desire to find out more about God and the Bible, I had no idea of being healed in this way. My reading revealed to me that I had not been a Christian at all, because I had failed to follow the Christ-teachings. Resentment, hasty judgment, criticism, temper, and sensitiveness had held sway in consciousness until they had been "imaged forth on the body" (Science and Health, p. 411). St. Paul said, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind," and as my thought began to change and these faults were diminished or exterminated, these words were proven absolutely to me, and I was transformed by the renewing of my mind.
