It is a very pleasant duty to be able to testify herewith to all the good which has come to me through Christian Science. In April, 1913, I suddenly experienced severe pain in the thumb of my right hand. Having a very slight knowledge at the time of the healing power of Christian Science, I went to a physician, after a sleepless night spent in suffering, and he stated the case to be one of serious infection, which I had contracted in my work as a butcher. The finger was operated on in various ways in the course of three weeks, but it grew worse with every day, till finally the physician told me to go to the hospital. The examining physician then stated that the bone was carious, and told me to prepare to have the thumb removed on the following day.
In my distress I hurried to my relatives who had received many benefits through Christian Science, and the same day we called upon a Christian Science practitioner in Hannover. I shall never forget the hour during which the practitioner explained to me the way leading to Truth, and the nothingness of matter. I left the house like one new-born. Still there was a hard struggle before me; but through reading the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the Herold, I gradually gained some understanding of the truth and felt also that divine Love was present with me. After two weeks' treatment the thumb had sufficiently healed to enable me to hold articles, and after four weeks I took a position. There is only a scar left now, and even that is gradually disappearing. I was also healed within one week of an injury above the eye, sustained by a fall while riding a bicycle. For the benefits received through Christian Science I herewith express my deep-felt gratitude, and I also feel very much indebted to Mrs. Eddy, and to all who have helped me to find the way leading to Truth.
Karl Bayer, Gronau, Prov. Hannover, Germany.
