Jesus said: "They shall put you out of the synagogues...

St. Joseph (Mich.) Press

Jesus said: "They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me." The Rev. Mr.—seems obsessed with the conviction that he is doing "God service" in his endeavor to discredit the religion of many of the good people of your city; and in asking for space to correct the gentleman's strictures on Christian Science I have no desire to continue a religious controversy further than to protect this religion from an unjust attack.

Christian Science has been subjected to vilification and criticism from the pulpit far more than any other religious denomination of which there is any record, yet in the less than fifty short years of its existence, and in spite of these unjust and almost wholly untrue attacks, it has encircled the globe with its beneficence, showing to the world a permanent growth unparalleled in the history of religious movements. No people have been watched and compelled to give a reason for the hope that is in them as have Christian Scientists, and may it be said to their credit, their cause has not suffered thereby. Christian Scientists claim that Christian Science is the religion of Jesus, and that in the working out of life's problems they are demonstrating a little more each day the religion that Jesus taught.

Christian Scientists submit that Christian Science is based wholly and unalterably on the teachings of the Bible, in explication of which they do not pick out isolated passages, tear them from their context, and endeavor to substantiate their position by these Scriptural fragments. They have taken the Bible as a whole, from Genesis to Revelation, in its spiritual import, as the sole foundation for their religion; and nothing in the Bible, interpreted spiritually, can be found contrary to its teachings. Likewise nothing in the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, can be found in contravention of Bible teachings. Christian Scientists believe that the divine Principle of being has always existed, unchanged in its eternal harmony by human beliefs and conditions; and that the Bible throughout records explanations and demonstrations of this Principle of being which have come to light through the lives of those who have risen high enough in the understanding of God, and the universe as created by God, to be able in a measure to prove and explain, according to the light given them, this great Principle. It must be plain to any one conceding the existence of an omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent God, that the creations of such a God must be governed and controlled eternally and unchangingly by that God, and that this government and control must be embraced in an unvarying Principle. It is this divine Principle of existence, this unchanging law of God, that Christian Scientists claim as the basis for all Scripture, which in turn is the basis for Christian Science.
