The Lectures

The introductory remarks of Prof. Joseph F. Wingebach, second reader, at the lecture on Christian Science delivered for Second Church of Christ, Scientist, by Jacob S. Shield, were as follows:—

Christian Scientists have apparently found something which seems worth while, for this "something" is proving to be a very present help in time of trouble. Indeed, the world is inquiring, "What is Christian Science?"

Some are asking this question with fear and trembling, lest the answer made them will also name the conditions and the price to be paid for this "something,"—the overcoming of prejudices, the giving up of old beliefs, and perhaps the abandonment of those very systems of education under which training has been sought. Again, there are others humbly asking, "What is Christian Science?" and earnestly desiring to know what is this power which today is healing the sick and the sinning and bringing harmony into consciousness. Tens of thousands have had undeniable evidence of the power of the truth as revealed in Christian Science, and thousands are now proving that this religion is demonstrable. So could you and I surely prove Christian Science a demonstrable science, were we to act in accordance with the Master's teaching and "become as little children," and going straight to him who was "meek and lowly," learn of him.
