Some thirteen years ago I began the study of Christian Science in a lukewarm way and drifted along for some five years, taking things as they came and giving out no more than I was forced to give; going to Wednesday evening meetings and absorbing everything that came my way, but giving nothing in return.
About this time red spots broke out on my body, and I immediately went to doctor, who diagnosed the trouble as a skin disease. Thinking I wanted treatment he prescribed some medicine, and also a brush to use twice a day. I used the medicine and the brush for a few days, and I was certainly a sight to behold when I threw them out and applied for help in Christian Science. I received the help and was a well man some ten days later. This, however, did not bring me to the point where I could give a cup of cold water in a Wednesday evening meeting to some one in distress.
A short time after this healing I began to feel more or less hatred toward a man in our city, thinking he did not care to associate or do business with me. This shows me now what pride will do when one does not throttle it in its infancy. A little later on, sitting down to think where this feeling would lead me, I woke up to its seriousness and changed my thought of the man. I tried to recognize his true individuality, God's own child and my brother. In about two weeks this man asked me to take lunch with him that noon and I accepted his invitation. We entered into harmonious business relations.
